Located at the foot of the well known Brouilly hill, in the heart of the Beaujolais,
the Castle of the Ravatys was bought by an engineer from Lorraine, AUGUSTE SOLET in the middle of the19th Century. As a Public work contractor, he made a fortune in Algeria where he constructed the viaducts for the railway line "Alger-Constantine". He personally designed plans of the castle and the exploitation buildings , in order to have at his disposal a modern and well structured facility.
He established himself in the Beaujolais and became the mayor of his village,
Saint-Lager, until his death in 1879. He was a generous man who created the first "mutual aid association" of the county.

His only son died in the war in 1870. He adopted his niece Mathilde Courbe
who inheritated all his posessions. With her entrepreneur mind, she efficiently managed the vineyard . Her wines obtained a bronze medal in the agricultural competition of the World Fair of 1900. She also made a consequent donation to the Belleville hospital in order to maintain a bed for the poor people of Saint Lager. As a President of the Beaujolais Red Cross, she set up and financed a military hospital which cared for 398 injured people during the 1st world war .
Her testament stipulates that Institut Pasteur is her sole legatee, consequently it
must:
  • give money to the town Nancy ( in the north east ) to keep a grave in repair and to help a young girl between 16 and 22 years old having talents in arts or sciences to study.
  • give 2 famous chests, one from the "Ducs de Lorraine" and the other from Louis XVI to the Nancy Museum
  • Le Château des Ravatys will not be sold
  • give a field as a demonstration place for young wine grower between 13 and 15 years old
  • give money to the town Saint Lager for a pension allowed to a widowed woman with many children or to a old man without family.
  • sell her building of the most famous place of Lyon and also her private hotel in Paris if the benefits of the castle are insufficient.
Recently, the 20th June 2002, Madame Rampon, living in Odenas and a "Côte de Brouilly" owner stipulated that she gave a piece of her vineyard to Institut Pasteur.
Having no descendants, she bequeathed all her belongings to the Pasteur Institute in 1937, the Ravatys Castle, with its 30 hectares of vineyard, being an inalienable
legacy.
Since1990, the Castle and the Orangery have entirely been modernised to welcome
visitors: seminars in the living room of the castle, wine tastings in the cellars, official dinners, conferences, weddings, exhibitions and concerts in the beautiful orangery, sports activities in the park...
This vineyard is one of Beaujolais' most important domains.
